Running Cicso VPN Client on Windows Vista (RC2 – Build 5744)
Have done a bit of research into the possibilty of running the Cisco VPN Client on Windows Vista, and it seems, that it is actually possible using a BETA of the Cisco Client.
I have however only tried this on Microsoft Virtual PC, but don’t see any reason why it should’nt work “on a normal pc”.
- Download vpnclient-win-msi-4.8.01.0410-k9-BETA.exe from this address: http://vpn.doit.wisc.edu/download/test/ (don’t know if it’s available elsewhere)
- Right-click the downloaded file, and select “Run as administrator”.
- Install the program
- Reboot your computer
- Upon reboot launch the VPN Client and import your existing profiles, if they are not already there.
- - and connect…

I have tried this client multiple times. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and it has never successfully ran on my Windows Vista Beta. It would install successfully, but when I went to run the Cisco VPN Beta client it would give me a simple errror about not being able to read my connection entry.
I have done every possible change and test to over come this simple error and it has never worked. This is the only reason I had to go back to Windows XP Pro. I have to have my VPN Client everyday.
I was not running any VMware or dual boot machine, just straight official Windows Vista Beta that I downloaded and burned an ISO DVD from Microsoft’s website.

I have however tried installing the Cisco VPN Client on another laptop (that is, not in a virtual PC) – and it actually does’nt work. It seems, that it never gets out of my laptop, unable to connect to my VPN Gateway.
I just can’t see why there should be any difference in running it in a virtual PC and running it on a physical laptop with the same version of Windows Vista (or almost Ultimate/Business).
Could it be a network interface card issue?

I too have tried this with the custom VPN client from the Cisco website which indicates it is for Vista OS

Hey … I ran into the same issue – error saying “Connection could not be read” or something… I found the vpn profile directory was installed here: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client … so just on a hunch, I copied the entire profile directory into the Cisco VPN installation directory, and blam! it worked!
Try it …
