SVCHOST using 100% CPU – caused by Microsoft Update

During the last month or so, my girlfriends PC have had problems with the SVCHOST.EXE process using 99% CPU power.

When starting the computer – it boots up fine, everything looked fine – but after say 5 minutes, it started to be extremely slow – and I found out, that the SVCHOST were running 99%. Then we could close the SVCHOST using the CPU-power using task manager – but after 10 min.s or so – it started again.

I did a couple of searches on google – and ended up with: http://forums.devshed.com/windows-help-34/svchost-exe-99-100-cpu-usage-hijackthis-tasklist-need-help-375578.html

I then went to http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us - scrolled down to where it says: “To stop using Microsoft Update” – and checked “Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only” – Apply Changes Now – did a reboot of the computer…

JOB DONE!
